Liposuction or suction assisted lipectomy refers to removal of excess fat deposits from specific parts of the body. This is a cosmetic surgery for enhancing the shape and aesthetic appearance by removal of stubborn fat which doesn’t respond to diet or exercise. Liposuction can be used for different body parts including abdomen, chest, thighs, back, neck, calves, ankles and even the face.
Any person with unsightly fat deposits in particular body areas which are accessible to liposuction would be candidates for this procedure. It is mostly indicated for body sculpting and not for weight loss and generally works best in active individuals with normal body weight and good skin elasticity.
Liposuction is usually done under general anaesthesia with the patient completely unconscious during the procedure and so there is no pain sensation during the process. In some cases, it may be done after injecting numbing fluid (local anaesthesia) if a small area of the body is targeted.
Liposuction surgery varies in duration depending upon the area being targeted and the amount of fat which needs to be removed. The duration of the procedure can be anywhere from an hour to even 5-6 hours or more.
Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure done to enhance body shapes and contour but doesn’t significantly impact the overall body weight. In some cases, high volume liposuction may help to reduce upto 10-12 kgs of weight at a single sitting.
Ideally, liposuction targets only one area of the body at a time and different body areas are tackled in different sittings. However, some surgeons may target 2-3 areas at one time provided the overall duration of the procedure is within acceptable limits.
Liposuction is usually done with the help of a long and narrow metallic tube known as a cannula attached to a suction tube. The cannula is inserted by making very small incisions in different areas of the skin which can be concealed after the procedure and hence it doesn’t leave any scars.
Liposuction helps in complete removal of fat cells from particular areas of the body and hence this effect is permanent as long as the person maintains their body weight. In case of weight gain, new fat cells may form resulting in loss of cosmetic result achieved.
VASER liposuction is a kind of modern liposuction which makes use of ultrasound energy to liquefy the fat and then it is removed by suction rather than mechanical liquefaction of fat as in traditional liposuction. This makes the process of fat removal faster and easier and decreases the chance of complications in the post operative period.
Removal of fat from the superficial and deep planes induces a fibrotic from the overlying skin response afterwards which leads to skin contraction in the next few weeks. Thus, the skin in the particular area gets tightened after liposuction giving a better cosmetic appearance.
Liposuction surgery results in immediate removal of fat from particular areas of the body giving rise to a noticeable difference immediately after the procedure. However, the results are best appreciated after 6-8 weeks after the swelling in body has subsided and the skin has contracted giving rise to a better cosmetic result.
