Vomiting is a common symptom after any and all types of bariatric surgeries and may become troublesome for some patients. Vomiting occurs most often in the first few days and weeks of surgery and usually subsides with time. However, vomiting persisting or developing after 6 months or more of surgery may suggest some pathology such as structure or acid reflux.
Vomiting most often occurs in the early phase due to the habit of taking food/ liquids quickly without giving the stomach time to accommodate the ingested food. There may be the habit of aerphagia in some people which can cause troublesome belching and reflux.
Some tips to avoid vomiting in early postoperative period:-If vomiting persists 6 months after surgery with difficulty in eating solid foods, one should consult their treating doctor and investigate the symptoms. In case of stricture/ narrowing of the food passage, it may require endoscopic dilatation or very rarely surgical correction.
