Eat small and frequent meals - Meals should be taken at proper time intervals and the portions should be limited to a quarter plate of food. Typically, patients are advised to take 6-8 small meals evenly spaced throughout the day
Proteins first- Patients are advised to take protein rich foods at the beginning of their meal to avoid deficiency in the long term. Proteins help in maintaining the lean body mass and avoid muscle wasting that may accompany rapid weight loss. They also provide satiety and limit the intake of calories.
Regular physical exercise- Physical exercise is part of any weight loss regimen and it’s importance cannot be overemphasised. Both aerobic exercises and weight training should be done regularly which helps maintain high BMR and aids in weight loss and weight maintenance.
Drink adequate water- Very often, because of the limited capacity to take food, patients compromise on their water intake and this may lead to dehydration and constipation. However, water should be taken ad libitum and frequently to have proper metabolism and urine output.
Take nutritional supplements- Bariatric surgery patients are often suffering from nutritional deficiencies right from the start and require multivitamin, calcium, protein and micronutrient supplements after their surgery. These may have to be continued for a year or more depending upon the food intake and symptoms.
Positive lifestyle changes- This is probably the most important aspect of any bariatric surgery program. The patient has to ingrain in his mind that their earlier lifestyle choices which led to the condition of obesity have to be given up and they should cultivate new interests and habits which promote good health. Amongst these are giving up addictions, sedentary lifestyle, junk foods, etc. and participating in recreational sports and outdoor activities regularly.
