Is it safe to perform bariatric surgery in summer months?

Bariatric surgery is a procedure for long term weight loss. It is performed almost exclusively by the laparoscopic approach which means that there are no large incisions at the time of surgery but rather only small key hole incisions are there.

The recovery after such a surgery is rapid and there are minimal chances of pain or wound infection. As such, performing this surgery in summer months doesn’t increase the risk of any infection or other complications.

Patients are advised to maintain adequate hydration after the surgery and should consume around 2 litres of fluids per day. This should be done by taking 100-200 ml of fluid every half to one hour spaced evenly throughout the day. This would help to prevent dehydration which is common in summer months and would facilitate a faster recovery.

Thus, bariatric surgery can be safely performed in the summer months as well without risk of undue complications.
