We are still facing the global threat of the coronavirus pandemic and the best weapon in our fight against coronavirus is vaccination. Vaccination of the majority of the population will help provide herd immunity and stop the transmission of the virus. Patients are often apprehensive about getting the vaccination after undergoing bariatric surgery.
Generally, we recommend that people should vaccinate themselves before undergoing bariatric surgery so that the risk of serious infection is averted. In cases where vaccination has not been done prior to the procedure, a person can get vaccinated within a week of undergoing bariatric surgery once the post operative recovery is complete. This would ensure their safety once they resume their routine work and activity. In cases where the recovery of the patient after the procedure has been prolonged or there some post operative complication, the vaccination should be done only on the advice of the treating surgeon once the recovery is complete. There is no evidence that bariatric surgery or any other elective surgery would lead to any undue complications with COVID 19 vaccination as compared to the general population.
Maintain healthy weight- This is one of the essential tips during this era as increased body mass and obesity leads to increased severity of COVID 19 infection. Obesity is a pro inflammatory state leading to dysregulated immune response with greater chances of hospitalisation and ICU admission after coronavirus infection.
Regular exercise- Especially cardiovascular and lung exercises help keep the systems fit and accelerate the recovery after infection. Any kind of aerobic exercise including jogging, running, cycling, swimming, etc. would boost cardiovascular health and help combat infection.
Take proper rest- At least 6-8 hours of night time sleep is essential for maintaining our body processes.
Healthy diet– Plenty of greens, fresh fruits, salads and fluids containingantioxidants would help boost the immune system and avoid contracting severe infection. Processed foods, oils and fats should be avoided which contain lot of free radicals and lead to inflammation in the body.
Safe COVID practises- Including staying in well lighted and ventilated spaces, wearing masks when necessary and avoiding overcrowding are essential to avoid the spread of infection.
