Bariatric surgery is a metabolic procedure for long term weight management. Weight loss following bariatric surgery typically occurs in two phases- the initial phase of rapid weight loss over 2-3 months followed by the second phase of gradual snd sustained weight loss over next 8-12 months.
The weight generally plateaus at 10-12 months following bariatric surgery. At this point , patients have typically lost between 60 to 80 percent of excess body weight. However , some patients especially those with very high initial weight require more weight loss which can be achieved by the following tips -
1. Caloric restriction- staying in caloric deficit is a great way of promoting weight loss. This can be achieved by consuming a high protein and high fibre diet. This helps in maintaining satiety and avoids excessive caloric intake. Liquid calories, processed foods and desserts should be eliminated altogether from the diet. Protein supplements in the form of whey protein and threptin biscuits help achieve caloric goals.
2. Weight training- helps to burn calories as well as build muscle which boosts the metabolic rate. This helps to increase BMR and helps in long term weight loss.
3. Enhance NEET- this is the non exercise energy thermogenesis or the amount of calories that person burns while walking / sitting or doing routine chores. Purposefully increasing your step count, using stairs and being active in general contributes to higher NEET and greater weight loss.
4. Lifestyle modification- choosing a healthy lifestyle which includes stringent mea timings , heathy food choices, regular outdoor activities and tier sleep contribute to maintaining healthy weight.
