Bariatric surgery is a metabolic procedure for long term weight loss. It can be performed for all adults who are suffering from morbid obesity ( BMI> 35 kg/m2) and are otherwise fit to undergo the surgical procedure. The ASMBS guidelines state that bariatric surgery may be performed for any individual between 18 to 65 years old. However, if the individual is physiologically fit, then the surgery may be performed in the older age group as well. Numerous studies have shown that the efficacy of bariatric surgery in terms of weight loss and comorbidity resolution is equal for young and older adults. Older adults tolerate bariatric surgery just as well without the risk of increase in complications. They are able to achieve a good weight loss with resolution of numerous ailments like diabetes, hypertension, joint pains, etc. and achieve an overall improvement in their quality of life.
