Bariatric surgery is a metabolic surgery for weight loss and resolution of obesity related comorbidities. Patients are advised to follow a strict diet plan for the first 2-3 months following surgery. After this period, they can take a normal diet but with small portions 6-8 times a day.
Patients are typically told to abstain from alcohol for the first month following surgery. However, after this period, they are allowed to consume alcohol in moderation. Aerated beverages including soda, beer and champagne are prohibited because they may cause excessive gas bloat and abdominal discomfort. Patient can take wine safely and may also take scotch or whiskey with water/ice. It is important for patients to remember that alcohol absorption is accelerated after most Bariatric procedures so it may result in a faster and sustained effect as compared to a normal person. Hence, the quantity of alcohol should be reduced and it’s consumption should be over a longer period of time.
