Estimate Surgery Cost

What is the minimum and maximum BMI for which bariatric surgery can be done?

Bariatric surgery is a metabolic procedure for the morbidly obese people. It is done under certain criteria of BMI .

BMI stands for body mass index and it is the ratio of weight and height of a certain individual. The greater the weight in relation to the height, the more will be the BMI.

Bariatric surgery is generally advised for people who have a BMI of more than 40 kg/m2. It can also be done for people having BMI of 35 kg/m2 if they have two or more obesity related complications such as diabetes, hypertension, joint pains, etc. Thus , people of lower BMI can opt for bariatric surgery if they are suffering the direct consequences of obesity.

However, there is no upper limit of BMI for which bariatric surgery cannot be done. If the person is fit enough to withstand general anaesthesia, there have been reports of people with BMI close to 100 kg/m2 also undergoing bariatric surgery successfully. However, there is no upper limit of BMI for which bariatric surgery cannot be done.
